The fourth reading from Russell concerns the principle of induction. After reading it, answer the
following in 500 words.
1. What is induction? What are two examples not in the reading?
2. Why must a belief acquired through induction remain uncertain?
3. What does it mean to "beg the question"? Provide an example of your own. Why does Russell claim using
induction to predict the future begs the question?
4. Two-hundred and fifty years after David Hume introduced this "problem of induction", there is
still no real consensus on a solution. Do you find the absence of a logically valid foundation for
the process of induction disturbing or is it something fairly easy to accept?
